What is Good & Plenty?
Good & Plenty is a kind of licorice candy. The candy is bite-sized and cylindrical. It resembles the shape of a capsule. The core is black licorice, and the candy has a hard shell. The candy capsules are white and pink in color, and bulk pieces are packaged in a purple cardboard cuboidal box.
History of Good & Plenty Candy
Good & Plenty candy first came into existence in 1893 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Quaker City Chocolate & Confectionery Company invented and produced the candy. It was one of the oldest brands of licorice candy in the United States.
The candy had its own television commercial in the 1950s. In the commercial, they portrayed a boy cartoon character “Choo-Choo Charlie.” He was a railroad engineer and would often mimic the sound of a train while shaking the bag of Good & Plenty candies. See Commercial below – it’s quite funny!
In 1973, the Quaker City Chocolate & Confectionery Company was purchased by Warner-Lambert. In 1982, the Leaf Candy Company (owned by Beatrice Foods) purchased Quaker City from Warner-Lambert.
In 1996, Hershey Foods bought the Leaf Candy Company. Good & Plenty candy is now a product of Hershey’s.
What is the Taste and Flavor of Good & Plenty Candy like?
Good & Plenty is a licorice candy. It has a hard candy shell on the outside and sweet and soft black licorice extracts on the inside. The shell is mostly sugar. It is grainy and not too crunchy and does not have any hint of the licorice flavor.
The insides are chewy and have a strong sweet taste. The presence of licorice flavor and molasses give a sugar rush. Since the candies are cylindrical and bite-sized, you can pop multiple pieces in your mouth. However, it could be a choking hazard for young kids, and they should consume it under the supervision of an adult.
The candies are pink and white in color, but both colors have the same taste.
What are the ingredients in Good & Plenty Candy?
