Introduction
The Bonomo Turkish Taffy is a classic that resonates with both the young and old in the US. The candy is unusual and different from other candies as it is a hard candy while also being chewy. The Turkish Taffy from Bonomo is made from a mixture of egg whites and corn syrup that is cooked and baked to perfection.
These were the perfect candy choice for budget-conscious people as they lasted a long time and were great to eat at the movies. This candy was discontinued for decades before being revived once again in different flavors. The most favorite flavor for many people used to be banana which used to carry the fruit’s refreshing and creamy taste.
When was Turkish Taffy Created?
The Bonomo Turkish Taffy was created just after the World War II and was sold for a nickel, which made it more popular among the economy-minded individuals of the 1950s and 1960s. Unlike the competitor bars that were present in the market at the time, Bonomo’s Turkish Taffy melted in the mouth slowly and was extremely chewy. The candy became a fan-favorite to take at the movies where it could last for a double feature.
The popularity of the Turkish taffy can be owed to the World War II, as many people were eager to try new and sweet foods after being freed from the restraints of rationing. As people began to demand treats to satisfy their sweet cravings, Bonomo presented them with great three options: Hats Off, Call Again, and Thanks. The cooks at Bonomo’s factory came up with a new recipe soon that consisted of corn syrup and egg whites which were cooked and baked. This new recipe was marketed as the Turkish Taffy.
Who Owns Bonomo Turkish Taffy?
Mr. Victor Bonomo is credited with introducing the world to the classic Turkish Taffy. Bonomo’s father, Albert J., started out in the candy industry and began producing candy to supply at the amusement parks near Coney Island. Victor joined his father in the candy industry on Coney Island which produced hard candies and saltwater taffy. After the cooks I the industry came up with an innovative “Turkish Taffy”, which was neither Turkish nor a family recipe, it became highly popular all over the country.
The taffy was first distributed as sheets of the size of a school desk and was distributed in stores where clerks broke it into shards using a hammer to be sold by the pound. Three flavors of the Turkish Taffy were produced over time: strawberry, chocolate, and banana. Victor Bonomo retired to Florida in the 1970s after which Bonomo’s Turkish Taffy was owned by multiple owners before finally being enveloped under the wing of Tootsie Roll Industries of Chicago in 1980. The product was discontinued by the company but revived recently due to popular demand.
