Pizza is a dish that has its origins in Italy. It is a flat, round base of dough topped with tomato sauce and cheese. Since then, it has evolved to include many different toppings and variations.
The first mention of pizza dates back to the 9th century when it was mentioned in a Latin text called Liber de Coquina by an Arab cook named Ibn Sayyar al-Warrak. The text mentions the word “pitta” which is thought to be the origin of the word “pizza”.
In Naples, Italy, pizza became popular because Queen Margherita was said to have liked this dish. Pizza was introduced as a fast food in America by Gennaro Lombardi who opened his pizzeria in New York City.
Pizza is one of the most popular foods around the world. It can be moderately healthy although we often think of it as less healthy. Some readers asked what the best pizza topics are, so this post is a list of my favorite pizza toppings!

The Best Pizza Toppings
Pepperoni
Pepperoni is the go to meat for most people. It has become the classic because it has some spice to it, it’s not something that most people have at home and it blends well with the cheese. Cheese and pepperoni is a great combination of spicy, salty and cheesy.
Pepperoni is a type of cured sausage, usually made from ground or chopped pork and beef that is seasoned with paprika, garlic powder, oregano, red pepper flakes, and other spices.
It is used as an ingredient in many dishes, such as pizza, lasagna, spaghetti bolognese, or calzone.
Peperoni is a type of salami that you can find in many Italian dishes. The word “peperoni” is the plural form of the Italian word “peperone.”

Ground Beef
Ground beef is a staple of many cultures and cuisines. It is popular across the world as a main dish, in sandwiches, tacos, and burritos. And it is especially good on pizza!
Ground beef is composed of three different types of meat – fat, muscle tissue and connective tissue. It is made by grinding or chopping meat with a coarse blade. It can be made from any type of animal but usually it comes from cows or pigs.
The meat can be mixed together with salt, pepper and onion powder before cooking to add extra flavor!

Ham
Ham is meat that is taken from the hind leg of a pig and cured by either smoking, curing, or wet packing. It is usually eaten cold or hot. There are two types of ham: Pressed ham: This type of ham has been pressed to remove much of its fat. Unpressed ham: This type of ham has not been pressed and retains more fat than pressed ham.
Ham is very versatile and goes well especially with pineapple. Some people love ham and pineapple pizza. The sweet and salty combo is loved by pizza lovers around the world.

Sausage
The sausage pizza topping is a popular pizza topping.
It was first introduced by the Italian immigrants in America. It is a type of pizza that has a thin crust, tomato sauce, and cheese. Some people also add onions, peppers, mushrooms or olives to the toppings.
In the US, sausage is one of the most popular toppings for pizza. Sausage can be added to any type of pizza but it is usually found on a thin crust or deep dish style pizza.
Sausage is one of our favorite meat toppings for pizza. There are many different versions of sausage – some are spicy, some are sweeter and some are very basic. Personally I love a spicy sausage which is usually a blend of beef and pork. Depending on the type of sausage and its spice/heat level, it will really change the taste of the pizza.
Canadian Bacon
Canadian bacon is a type of ham, usually cured and smoked. It is made from lean pork loin that has been trimmed of fat, cut into slices, and then cured with salt and brown sugar. This is different from American-style bacon in that it doesn’t include the fatback side meat.
It has spice, heat and salt and it tastes amazing with cheese. A Canadian Bacon pizza is a big favorite of meat lovers everywhere!
Onions
If you are looking for a pizza topping that is not only delicious but also healthy, then onion is the way to go. It also goes well with most other topics too and its a good way to add more veggies to your pizza! It adds flavor and texture to the pizza, while also adding different dimension to the taste.
Onion has no cholesterol and it contains a lot of vitamin C. In addition, onions are rich in antioxidants and they can help lower your blood pressure by reducing the risk of heart disease.
Onion pizza topping is a great alternative to meat, cheese or even pepperoni. It has a natural sweetness that balances out the saltiness in the cheese and sauce on your pizza.
Cheese
Since most pizzas come with cheese (except for red pizzas which just have sauce on top), you might not think of the cheese as a topping, but it is one of the most important ones!
Cheese is a dairy product that is produced by coagulating milk and removing the whey. It can be made from any type of milk, but most commonly it is made from cow’s milk.
Different types of cheese are made from different milk: cow, goat, sheep, buffalo and so on. They are also made from different types of milk: whole, skimmed or semi-skimmed.
There are many different types of cheese: Blue Cheese, Brie Cheese, Cheddar Cheese, Cream Cheese, Feta Cheese Gouda Cheese, Mozzarella Cheese, Parmesan Cheese, and Swiss Cheese
Usually Swiss, Parmesan and mozzarella are the most common cheese used on pizzas.
Peppers
Peppers on pizza is a hotly debated topic – some people love them but others hate them!
There is no consensus on whether peppers should be on pizza or not. Some people think that it is a necessity, while others think that it ruins the taste of the pizza.
Adding peppers to pizza is a simple way to spice up the flavor and add more veggies to your pizza!
The most common types of peppers are red and green sweet peppers. These are a bit like a relish and do not add heat. Chili peppers add quite a hot kick but they are typically not used directly on pizzas. Chili spices are usually included in chili oil or sausage or pepperoni that contains chili oil.
Chicken
If you want some meat on your pizza but not pork or beef, go with the chicken! If it is by itself and plain it can be healthy. And you can always add more vegetables for flavor.
Or if you want more calories, flavor and fat be sure to try some buffalo or BBQ chicken – will add tons more calories!
If you want a healthier pizza, get some lean chicken without additives. It’s a great protein source and much leaner than red meats like beef or pork.
Black Olives
Black olives are salty and good with basil or other greens as a second or third ingredient. Kids tend to love to eat them raw and if you are making the pizza at home, the little ones might grab some olives off the pizza before you cook it!
Black olives tend to have a stronger and more complex taste compared to green olives. They are a good addition to other ingredients but if you just had a black olive pizza, it would be way too salty!
Black olives are a variety of ripe olives that have been cured in a mixture of salt and sulfur dioxide. They are rich in vitamin E, beta-carotene, and zeaxanthin, and they have a lower calorie content than green olives.
Pesto
Pesto is always a great way to add flavor to any dish and pizza is no exception. This recipe is perfect for the summer months because it’s light, fresh, and full of flavor. Personally, I love it!
The most common types of pesto pizzas are the Margherita Pesto Pizza and the Pesto Pizza Siciliana.
What is pesto? Pesto is a sauce that is made from fresh basil leaves, garlic and pine nuts. The sauce is usually made by crushing the ingredients together in a food processor or blender. The sauce originates from the Italian region of Liguria. It traditionally consists of crushed garlic, pine nuts, coarse salt, basil leaves, olive oil and Parmesan cheese. There are many variations of pesto recipes. Some include spinach or arugula instead of basil leaves and walnuts instead of pine nuts.
The key to whether people like pesto on a pizza seems to be exactly how it is used. Is it used on the base over the cheese, or used in smaller amounts on TOP of the cheese. For most people, a little pesto is a good option. It also goes well with sun dried tomatoes or basil.
A little bit of a pesto drizzle on a cheese pizza like a margharita pizza, is an excellent taste combination.
Mushrooms
Mushrooms on pizza is a popular topping for those who love the earthy, chewy texture. They are also a great way to get your daily dose of vitamin D.
The word mushroom is derived from the Old French word “mousseron” which means “one who tramps through the woods” or “one who gathers mushrooms”.
They are one of the best pizza ingredients because mushrooms bring out the umami flavors which are one of the core tastes your tastebuds can sense. They go well with any meat to get a blend of umami, salt, fat and spice combinations. Or if you are vegetarian or plant based, they are excellent in a veggie pizza.
