History of Lucas Gusano
In 1986, two brothers Alejandro Martinez and Hugo Martinez started making candy in the city of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon. They started with a candy that was produced from Tamarind pulp and was originally called Rico Pelo Loco. Within a short time, this unique candy became a popular sensation in Mexico, resulting in a monthly production of more than 200,000 treats. This popularity led the brothers to establish their company, Alitec, which is now called Alimentos Matre S.A. de C.V.
Lucas is one of their most popular brands which is a name that they gave to their most famous product, Lucas Acidito, which is a lemon flavored chili powder that gave the company a major boost in popularity. In 1999, the company created their most revolutionary product, Skwinkles, which is a thin spaghetti shaped candy that comes in fruity flavors and a sour chili sauce. This product gave way to new candies in the same sweet and spicy category.
In 2001, the company became widely popular in continental markets of North America, South America, Asia, and europe. This popularity drew the attention of a known candy manufacturer Grupo Mars Inc., who acquired the Lucas brand.
Today, the Mars company has been producing and distributing Lucas products in chili and tamarind flavored candies. Lucas Gusano, Skwinkles and Salsagheti are some of their products that are also a huge success all over the world.
