History of Rolo Candy

Rolo Candy was first produced in 1937 by Mackintosh in the United Kingdom. Rowntree later took over the manufacturing in 1969.

Rolo was born by combining Mackintosh’s famous toffee along with a coat of chocolate. It was sold widely all across England. The New England Confectionery Company got a license to produce Rolo in the United States in 1956. The Hershey’s Company later took over the license in 1969 to produce Rolo exclusively in the US.

Nestle bought Rowntree and all its subsidiary brands, including Rolo, in 1988. They manufacture Rolo muffins, biscuits, cake bars, birthday cakes, ice creams, yogurts, doughnuts, mini Rolos, big Rolos, and Rolo Easter Eggs. All of them use identical caramel filling.

Presently, Nestle is the manufacturer of the famous Rolo Candy all across, except in the US. For the United States, the candies are manufactured by The Hershey Company.

Video – 1979 Rolo Commercial – “Roll a Rolo To Your Pal…”
