What are Popchips?
Popchips is an American brand of Popped Potato and corn chips. They are light and fluffy chips that look and taste a little bit like crispy rice cakes. They are made by processing potato starch at a very high temperature, quite similar to the manufacturing process of rice cakes.
Popchips are famous for being a healthy alternative to other snacks and chips available in the market. Popchips are known for their low fat and low-calorie snacks, claiming they have less than 50% fat compared to their competitors.
Due to their nutritional properties, Popchips are very popular among fitness freaks, health-conscious people, and people on a diet.
History of Popchips
Popchips was founded by Keith Belling in 2007 with a vision to give customers a healthy and guilt-free way of snacking. Keith, a corporate lawyer, decided to quit his job at the age of 27 and became a serial entrepreneur.
After establishing a chain of restaurants and running other successful channels, Keith wanted to launch his line of snacks. He partnered with his coworker Patrick Turpin, and during their research for the new venture, the partners came across a rice cake manufacturing plant near LA.
Keith studied how the high-pressure cooking method makes rice pop like popcorn, making it a healthy yet delicious snack.
Keith and Patrick ended up buying the manufacturing plant for $10 million in October 2005. And after 1.7 years of hit & trial, research & hard work, they launched Popchips, hitting retail stores in May 2007. They initially focused on the West Coast area, selling it for $2.80 a bag.
Popchips are now sold in more than 30,000 stores globally, making it one of the most popular snacks in the world. Keith Belling emphasized word of mouth and guerilla marketing; his marketing was very different and unique.
He would send bags and bags of Popchips to famous and influential people, from models to fashion designers to fitness influencers. He also even sent Popchips to every employee of Amazon.com, J Crew Group, and Nike Inc.
Starting local and focusing in New York and then expanding to 15 other cities and now selling globally, the annual sales of Popchips have grossed more than $100 million. Given the popularity of Popchips among Fitness enthusiasts and health-conscious individuals, it got attention from many celebrities. It got investments from the likes of Ashton Kutcher, Jillian Michaels, Katy Perry, and Heidi Klum.

What Are the Ingredients in The Popchips?
Ingredients of Popchips are dried potato, sunflower and/or safflower oil, rice flour, seasoning (cane sugar, tapioca maltodextrin, salt, brown sugar, tomato powder, garlic powder, onion powder, torula yeast, yeast extract, spices, natural hickory smoke flavor, citric acid, natural flavors, paprika extract [color], paprika), and potato starch.
How Are Popchips Made?
Popchips have a famous tagline written on their bag “think popped! never fried. never baked.”
You don’t become one of the healthiest snacks in the market by deep-frying their product in oil.
Popchips use the method of high-pressure cooking, the same manufacturing process through which rice cakes are made. The process starts with processing potatoes in tiny petals and Kernel size pieces.
Then these pellets are mixed in a hopper and then put in molds, where they are exposed to heat and high pressure, which gets rid of moisture and results in the pop texture.
