Golden Grahams Cereal – The Taste of Childhood

Golden Grahams Cereal

Last Updated on June 21, 2022 by Jim Edwards

Launched almost four decades ago, Golden Grahams is a cereal that has withstood the test of time and to this day remains a consumer favorite. For most of us, it was the first cereal we ever had. Starting our days with a massive bowl of these bite-sized squares dipped in milk is a core memory from our childhood that we just can’t forget.

Although made from the simplest ingredients, Golden Grahams has a distinct taste that can’t be compared to any other cereal on the market. This culinary masterpiece was created by combining the crunchiness of graham crackers with the kick of cinnamon and the sweetness of brown sugar. Indeed, Golden Grahams Cereal is an underrated classic and a treat for kids and adults alike.

History of Golden Grahams Cereal

First released in 1976, Golden Grahams Cereal was initially presented and owned by a brand called ‘Cereal Partners.’ It is produced under the Nestle brand worldwide except in the US and Canada, where it is currently sold under the General Mills brand.

The cereal was heavily marketed with multiple TV commercials during its launch and became known for its fun jingle called ‘Oh those golden Grahams’. This jingle was actually based on a song written by James Bland in 1879 and sung by many blackface minstrels titled ‘Oh dem golden slippers.’

We millennials know this song from an episode of ‘The Simpsons’ sung by Homer’s beloved character during his flight to outer space. Later, the company started marketing the product with the slogan ‘You’re not just good, you’re golden’, which stuck around till the mid-’80s. They even introduced a mascot, Honey the honey drop.

For a while, he was included in most TV commercials and even presented on the cereal’s box packaging, but his stay was relatively short-lived and, for the most part, was marketed by celebrities.

The franchise’s popularity kept growing, and soon the company started releasing spin-offs of the traditional bite-sized cereal.

In 1982, Cereal Partners launched S’mores Grahams or S’mores Crunch, a fun chocolaty twist on the original Golden Grahams. Along with cinnamon, whole wheat, and brown sugar, S’mores Grahams had the added sweetness of chocolate and chunky marshmallow pieces, similar to those found in pre-made hot chocolate mixes.

They also introduced a mascot for this new version called ‘The S’morecer’ and an animated sorcerer. Unlike Golden Grahams, S’mores Crunch wasn’t as popular and couldn’t hold its place in the market; it was discontinued only six years later in 1988.

While Cereal Partners didn’t release any new cereal associated with Golden Grahams moving forwards, they altered its packaging and taste several times. Multiple new boxes were released with each carton, including a Graham Treats recipe on the back. Out of the many Graham Treats introduced, Graham Cereal Bars and Graham Indoor S’mores were the most popular and are to this day.

In 2020, Golden Grahams launched their ‘Retro Special’ package, which is supposedly based on the original recipe that was used back in the 80s. It includes honey which was no longer used in manufacturing the product back in 2012. However, kids who were avid Golden Grahams eaters back in the day have tried this retro version and complained that it tastes nothing like the original recipe.

The fact that even after 30 years, Golden Grahams has maintained its place on store shelves amongst the myriad of other cereals introduced is a testament to its success. Even today, many renowned brands work alongside this franchise to introduce new collaborations.

Just recently, in January of 2022, Nestlé’s Coffee-Mate, the internationally famous coffee sweetener, announced that they’d be launching a flavor inspired by Golden Grahams. It would have the distinct taste of cereal-esque milk, allowing coffee lovers to have their dose of morning caffeine and cereal simultaneously.

What Does Golden Grahams Cereal Taste Like?

The concept of Golden Grahams Creel came into existence after creators at Cereal partners were inspired by the combination of traditional cinnamon graham crackers and milk. This innovative breakfast cereal consists of tiny bite-sized graham cracker squares that can be eaten with milk.

When you study the ingredients, you’ll be surprised to know that Golden Grahams is a relatively healthy cereal having more nutritional value than an average cereal on the market.

Most of the carbohydrate and fiber content comes from the cracker itself, made from corn and whole wheat. The taste is very similar to a regular cinnamon graham cracker made sweeter by the addition of brown sugar or honey, producing a sweet maple syrup-like flavor when mixed with milk.

One cool thing to note is that only 11 grams of grain are present in one serving of Golden Grahams. The cereal also doesn’t use high-fructose corn syrup and strays away from artificial colors, flavors, or ingredients.
