Pizza has evolved from a simple food item to an entire food category. It has become synonymous with having a quick bite to eat wherever you are, especially if you just eat a single slice! There are many variations and adaptations of pizza around the world, each of them bringing its own unique taste.
Different Types of Pizzas
There are so many different types of pizzas, some of which are mentioned below.
The Neapolitan pizza is the original one. It goes back to the 18th century in Naples, Italy, where it was preferred by poorer people who were looking to have a cheap and quick-to-eat food item. Neapolitan pizza was the best option for them as it was affordable and could be made easily.
The Neapolitan pizza has several toppings on it with slight variations. The most common toppings are oregano, basil leaves, tomatoes, mozzarella, and olive oil. It is important to note that you can not put too many toppings on it as the crust of the Neapolitan pizza is quite thin so thin that it is normally eaten with cutlery.
New York Style Pizza
The New York Style Pizza is arguably the most common variation of pizza you will come across. This is essentially derived from the Italian immigrants to New York in the early 20th century. It was initially a form of Neapolitan pizza, but the additions to its baking have made it a completely separate item.
The New York Style Pizza is famous for its foldable slices and a crispy outer crust. It mostly has tomato sauce and low-moisture mozzarella cheese with several toppings like sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, anchovies, and many others. Although you can add practically any topping you like to New York Style Pizza, most people prefer to have condiments like oregano, garlic powder, and parmesan cheese.
According to some pizza enthusiasts, the New York Style pizza should be cooked in a wood or coal oven to retain its authentic flavor. However, most people prefer to have it baked in a gas oven. This results in a crispy and delicious feel to it.
The Sicilian pizza is a square, deep-dish pizza that has a thicker crust and is chewier. As the name indicates, Sicilian pizza originated from Sicily, but instead of being baked in pizza shops, they were commonly found in bakeries. It can be served with or without the cheese. If served with cheese, the cheese is usually put under the sauce which
The Sicilian pizza slices are found with toppings such as anchovy and tomato sauce with onions, herbs, tomatoes, and bread crumbs sprinkled on top of it.
For the best flavor of the Sicilian pizza dough, the pan should be lined with olive oil. Different temperatures will set the time for your baking. If, for instance, your oven has 425 degrees Fahrenheit, it will take roughly 15-20 minutes to have your Sicilian pizza properly baked.
The Greek pizza was an adaptation of the Italian pizza by the Greek immigrants. They are mostly identified by a thick, chewy crust and a deep-fried bottom layer. This is because they are cooked in shallow pans. It isn’t as thick as Sicilian pizza, but it has more puffiness and chewiness than thin-crust pizzas.
Greek pizzas have a lot of sauces added on top of it. The popular version of sauces has tomato paste and an oregano flavor. Greek toppings may be added to it like feta cheese, red onion, and black olives. The cheese is a blend of mozzarella and cheddar.
Some people may not care about the type of pizza crust they have, but it is one of the most important factors in baking an amazing pizza. Just like the pizza itself, there are various types and variations in the crusts, but the two most popular choices are thin and thick crusts.
When it comes to thin-crust pizzas, you will see how the pizzas are quite slim in the center but expand into a crispy, doughy border. That is because the center part has the most cheese, sauce, and ingredients.
If you want to have a thin crust, you should gently stretch the dough until you get edges. Since thin-crust pizzas cannot carry the weight of so many toppings, it is important to remember not to pile them up on it. However, if you plan to have many toppings, it is recommended to thicken the center of the pizza to give the toppings more support from underneath.
As opposed to thin crust, the thick crust can easily support the weight of the sauce and many toppings. On average, the thickness of such a crust can be from 1/8 inch to ¼ inch. The thick crust pizzas have their edges filled with sauces and cheese, which is why the crust is shaped like the pan that will bake it.
Regional Pizza Styles
If you are looking for regional pizza styles, there are several of them. Each style has its own uniqueness.
The New Haven pizza may look quite similar to the New York-style pizza because of the flat, circular shape and large thin crust. However, the New Haven pizza is not sold by the slice as they are smaller in size. The dough is fermented longer, giving the pie a wobbly shape.
One of the most defining features of the New Haven is the amount of char you can get on your fingers. The burnt aspect isn’t the pizza being ruined; it adds a whole new level of flavor and crispiness.
The Detroit pizza has its characteristic rectangular shape with a thick tomato sauce on top of it. However, the Detroit pizza is still one of the lighter pizza variations. Most people prefer to have toppings pressed into the dough and then have cheese sprinkled on top of it. To avoid the crust becoming soggy, the sauce is put on the last.
It has the cheese throughout the pizza, even into its edges. Most of the time, brick cheese is used, which has a buttery, cheddar-like flavor but is softer than cheddar.
Chicago Deep Dish
The Chicago Deep Dish is loaded with cheese and other toppings, making it one of the heaviest pizza variations. Because it is so fulfilling, it makes for an excellent hearty meal, perfect for friends and family on a cool evening.
The mozzarella cheese is found at the bottom, while the tall sides of the crust are full of crispiness and an inch-thick filling. The reason why the cheese is at the bottom is because the Chicago Deep Dish takes a long time to be baked in an oven, at least 30 minutes. This would cause the cheese on top to be burnt or hardened.
Domino’s Pizza Crust Types
There are five different types of Domino’s pizza crusts.
The Deep Pan pizza has a thick and hearty taste. For the best deep pan pizza experience, people avoid putting eight or more toppings on it.
The Class Crust pizza has a crispier exterior as compared to its interior. The interior is quite soft and fluffy. When compared to Deep Pan, the Classic Crust is quite thin.
Thin ‘N’ Crispy
This pizza crust is almost wafer-thin and full of crispiness, as the name indicates. You will be able to feel the crunch all the way through.
The Cheesy Crust has a soft, malleable cheese in it that tastes like cheddar.
For gluten-free people, this is the ideal choice. The Gluten-Free Base has no gluten in it and is quite delicious and crispy.
In this era, pizza is among the most popular food choices for people of all ages, especially youngsters. It is easy to make, which makes it an even more popular food choice considering the fast-paced. No one can say which pizza is best because everyone has their own preferences!
