History of Werther’s Original Candy
Werther’s Original is a German brand of caramel-flavored candy, known as Werther’s Echte in Germany. It came around for the first time in 1903. August Storck KG, a Berlin-based candy company, owns Werther’s Original.
The candy is named after a town in Westphalia called Werther. The candy was marketed as Werther Echte since 1969. The name Werther’s Original was coined for the international markets in 1990.
The candy is quite popular in Europe and North America.

There are five main variations of the candy.

What is the Taste and Flavor of Werther’s Original Candy like?
The presence of butter and fresh cream as ingredients make the candies very smooth and creamy in texture. You can feel the creaminess once the candy starts melting in your mouth. The presence of caramel makes the candy taste very sweet and they are bite-sized and loved by both kids and adults!
The coffee and cappuccino filled hard candies give a coffee flavor. The blend of coffee and caramel makes the flavor very pleasant. Similarly, the apple-filled hard candies have a hint of green apples in their taste.
All the variations have caramel in them and are very sweet in taste.
Apart from the chewy caramel candies, all other variations of Werther’s Original candies are hard. You need to suck on it for a while before hitting the caramelized core.

Werther’s Original candy ingredients are glucose syrup (from corn or wheat), popcorn, sugar, whey, cream, butter, butterfat, containing less than 2% of cane syrup, salt, sunflower oil, soy lecithin emulsifier, and artificial flavors.

Is Werther’s Original Candy Gluten-free?
Werther’s Original candies contain glucose syrup that may be derived from wheat. The Coeliac Society explains that it is safe to include the candy in a gluten-free diet even though the glucose syrup is extracted from a wheat source. The quantity is minimal (less than 20 ppm of gluten per product).
However, the brand does not label the candy as gluten-free. If you have a gluten allergy, we recommend speaking to your physician before consuming Werther’s Original candies.
