Monster Mash Cereal: What to Expect from This Fun Combo of Our Favorite Monsters

Everything you need to know about the monster mash cereal.

Last Updated on June 28, 2022 by Jim Edwards

Considered one of the classic fan favorites among all Halloween cereals, the Monster Mash Cereal is an amalgamation of all our favorite monsters from yesteryear in one box.

The news of this new cereal box broke the internet in early 2021, and everyone was stoked to find out what General Mills had in store for them after a couple of years of seeing the same monsters, boxes, and flavors. Now, the verdict is out on this limited-time edition, and it’s BERRYLICIOUS.

Inside the Monster Mash Cereal box, which celebrates 50 years of the monster cereal, are differently-shaped and colored cereals representing five of our top-favorite cereal monsters, including Boo Berry, Franken Berry, Count Chocula, Frute Brute, and Yummy Mummy. The monster head, bat, and ghost-shaped pieces also pay homage to other monster mascots.

Although these five are the stars of the cereal. However, their original flavors are not a part of this combo, as that would have been a little too spooky for the Halloween season. This cereal instead features a berry flavor with hints of marshmallow, essentially making it a combination of Franken Berry and Boo Berry.

History of Monster Mash Cereal

Although Monster Cereals have been around since 1971, when Frankenberry and Count Chocula made their debut, this was the first time ever that all the five monsters were united in a single box of cereal. Inspired by classic horror movie characters, Boo Berry joined the monster family in 1972 and was available on a national scale a year later.

The fruity and marshmallow-y Frute Brute hit the shelves in 1974 and was discontinued about eight years later. We were then introduced to Yummy Mummy in 1988, which also returned to the General Mills vault in 1992.

Both of these discontinued fruity monsters made a smashing return in 2013 for a limited time and marked the first time in history that all five of the Monsters from the Monsters cereal were on the shelves at the same time.

Now, the newly created Monster Mash Cereal is turning heads with its aesthetic box alone. On the cover, you’ll see all five of the featured monsters playing the cover of Monster Mash, which is available on Spotify premium accounts. If you scan the QR code at the back of the box, you’ll be taken to a webpage where you can get a sneak peek into the song and view a “behind the music” video.

In addition to this, the monsters also collaborated with Funko for the release of the following three new collaborations:

  1. POP! Watches. These are the first Funko Halloween watches ever made.
  2. POP! Funko Vinyl Foodies characters.
  3. Vinyl SODA products with a limited-edition vinyl figure and collectible disc inside the can-shaped packaging. Frute Brute will be flocked, Boo Berry will glow in the dark, and Count Chocula will be metallic. Only 5,000 pieces are expected to be released for each monster.

Monster Mash Cereal Flavor

The crispy Monster Mash Cereal has a blueberry flavor with notes of marshmallows. Overall, the blueberry dominates the taste of the cereal with a mild marshmallow taste of the multi-colored marbits.

Moreover, the flavor and packaging aren’t the only new things introduced with this limited-time cereal box; the previous oat-based monster cereals have been replaced by a corn-based Monster Mash. While that does offer a pleasant twist, this also means that the cereal will grow soggy comparatively faster.

The berry- and marshmallow-flavored Monster Mash box is available in family size and a relatively smaller size for those who get bored of eating the same cereal every other day.

As for the other separate Monster boxes, these are the flavors you will find inside:

  1. Franken Berry – Strawberry Flavor (introduced in 1971, based on Frankenstein)
  2. Count Chocula – Chocolate Flavor (introduced in 1971, based on Count Dracula)
  3. Boo Berry – Blueberry Flavor (introduced in 1973, based on ghosts)
  4. Frute Brute – Fruit Flavored with Lime Marshmallows (introduced in 1974, based on The Wolf Man)
  5. Yummy Mummy – Fruit Flavored with Vanilla Marshmallows (introduced in 1987, based on The Mummy)

The Overall Verdict on the Monster Mash Cereal

While some folks just can’t get enough of the Monster Mash cereal, others prefer to only have it till the novelty fades away. The corn-based cereal becomes soggy very quickly, and the notes of blueberry and marshmallow become underwhelming as you add milk to it.

However, don’t let that distract you from the fact that this cereal is the harbinger of Halloween and all things spooky. You will enjoy this snack while you’re binge-watching your favorite horror movie trilogy or need a little energy during your Halloween errands.

Monster Mash Cereal Song

The Monster Mash Cereal Song is available on Spotify’s premium accounts as well as on the official website of the Monster Mash Cereal.

However, you can also listen to it on YouTube. Choc, Frank, Boo, Frute, and Yummy – the world’s most famous monster supergroup – have reunited for the first time in decades to remake the greatest monster anthem of all time, the Monster Mash.
