Nerds Rope candy was accidentally invented; the story behind it is that a worker at Nerds candy factory poured some hot gummy mixture in a bowl of Nerds candy and then went for his lunch break.

The original Nerds candy was first produced in 1983 by Sunmark Corporation, launched under the flagship brand name ‘Willy Wonka Candy Company’ until they decided to change the branding in 2017 to Ferrara Candy Company, a subsidiary of Ferrero Group.
