Pepsi is evolving their popular drink with a big technology breakthrough. They have unveiled their first ever cola that is infused with nitrogen. The cola is being positioned as being “softer than a soft drink” – because it is creamy, smooth, and topped by a cascade of tiny foam bubbles on top.
How do they achieve this technological breakthrough? The innovation is made possible by placing a device at the bottom of each can that enables the nitrogen to infuse the drink only when it is opened and poured into a glass (see images below). In other words, nitrogen replaces the carbon dioxide typically found in a regular soda and that gives it a “softer” feel and taste in your mouth.

Pepsi believes this is a huge leap forward that will redefine cola for many years to come. According to Pepsi’s internal research, many people don’t drink soda due to heavy carbonation, so they seek to entice old soda drinkers back and add new ones with this new approach aimed at providing a more silky smooth texture by adding a foamy head on top of the cola.

How To Best Enjoy Nitro Pepsi
According to Pepsi, it is really best if you consume the beverage in a very specific way.
- Serve it cold from the refrigerator
- Note: Best to avoid adding ice, as that will dilute the taste and flavor
- Pour it quickly into a tall glass – invert the can in a hard pour – this activates the nitrogen the best
- Sip directly from the glass itself – no straw. That allows the foam to be part of every sip and changes the drinking experience

Although it was first announced in 2019, it took Pepsi some time to bring this new beverage to market. It took some time to perfect the technology and make things just right.
