One thing more interesting than the Oh Henry Chocolate bar is its history. There are so many theories and arguments regarding Oh Henry’s origin and how the chocolate bar got its name.
There are multiple theories on Oh Henry’s origin story. According to its manufacturer Nestle, the chocolate bar was first produced by George Williamson, the owner of Williamson Candy company from Chicago, in the year 1920. There is also an alternate theory that Thomas Henry, who worked as manager Peerless Candy Company in Arkansas, invented the bar in 1910 and then sold the recipe and rights in 1920 to George Williamson. But there is no evidence and documentation to prove this.
There are also theories on how Oh Henry Chocolate bars got their name; One theory suggests that the name was inspired by a young flirt named Henry, a regular visitor of Williamson company but not for the candies but to flirt with the ladies who worked at the company. Whenever the girls needed any favor they would shout ‘’Oh Henry’’
Another theory is that the candy bar was initially called Tom Henry bar, named after the owner of Peerless Candy Company, Tom Henry, which was later changed in 1920 to Oh Henry when Williamson candy bought it.
In 1965, the Williamson company was bought by Warner-Lambert, which sold the rights and recipe of Oh Henry to Terson Inc. Nestle in 1984 procured the rights of the brand in the United States from Terson. A few years back, Nestle sold its rights to its U.S confectionary products to Ferrara Candy company.
