What are Sour Punch Twists?
Sour Punch Twists are chewy and sour candies that look like a medium sized twisted straw.
Sour Punch Twists are individually wrapped in transparent packs. They are, however, sold in a bulk plastic container. The Twists come in two lengths – three inches and six inches.
Sour Punch Twists are perfect for snacking anytime and anywhere. The bulk package contains a mix of flavors like blue raspberry, strawberry, apple, cherry, and watermelon.
History of Sour Punch
Sour Punch Twists came into existence for the first time in 1999.
In the 1990s, the Sour Punch brand was one of the first sour candy brands in the United States to gain massive popularity. Sour Punch are sour but not too sour and perfect for most people who want something sour, but don’t want to go super extreme and wreck your tastebuds!
Sour Punch has five varieties of sour candies – Twists, Straws, Ropes, Bites, and Bits. All the varieties maintain the same flavor mix, but the degree of sourness varies.
The American Licorice Company owns the Sour Punch brand.
What is the taste and flavor of Sour Punch Twists like?
Sour Punch Twists are coated with sour sugar. (Note: This is the “sour sugar” mentioned in our post about What Makes Sour Candy Sour?) The candies are shaped like twisted straws and they are flexible, soft, and chewy. The texture is gelatinous, but the candies do not contain any gelatin in them. They have the texture of a red vine licorice.
The individually wrapped Twists come in an assortment of flavors, namely apple, strawberry, cherry, blue raspberry, and watermelon. The different flavors can be easily distinguished.
Due to the sour sugar coating, you experience a perfect balance of sweet and sour. Even though the candies are not extremely sour, excessive consumption of Sour Punch Twists can damage your teeth and burn your inner cheeks due to the presence of citric acid.
What are the ingredients in Sour Punch Twists?
The ingredients in Sour Punch Twists are sugar, wheat flour, corn syrup, malic acid, citric acid, tartaric acid, glycerin, glyceryl monostearate, artificial flavors, and artificial colors (Yellow 5, Blue 1, Red 40).
