What is Charleston Chew?
Charleston Chew is a popular American candy bar. It consists of a chocolate coating on the outside and a flavored nougat on the inside. Nougat is a term used for sweets made from nuts, egg whites, and sugar or honey. In other words, a yummy, chewy candy bar that kids of all ages love!
The candy bar is available in three classic flavors – chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. There are bite-sized Mini Charleston Chews available as well in the same flavors. And they are GREAT in the freezer too if you like a frozen sensation, especially during the summer months!
History of Charleston Chew
Charleston Chew came into existence in 1925. The Fox-Cross Candy Company (owned by Charlie Fox and Donley Cross) created the candy bar. Charleston was a popular dance form during that era, and the candy derives its name from it. The original Charleston Chew was vanilla flavored with a chocolate covering.
Nathan Sloane bought the Fox-Cross Candy Company in 1957. He introduced two more flavors in the 1970s – strawberry and chocolate. In 1980, he sold the company to Nabisco.
In 1988, Nabisco sold the candy company to Warner-Lambert. In 1993, Warner-Lambert passed on the baton to the Tootsie Roll Industries.
Tootsie Roll Industries are the current owners of all forms of Charleston Chew.
What is the Taste and Flavor of Charleston Chew like?
All Charleston Chew bars and mini chews are soft to bite. The candy bars are sweet and chocolaty and do not stick in your mouth. The great thing about the flavors is that they all have a chocolate exterior coating and then an inner layer that is either chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry!
Charleston Chew candy bars are available in three flavors:
- Chocolate: The outer covering is chocolate, and the inner layers are chocolate flavored. Overall, the candy is sweet and chocolaty.
- Strawberry: the outer covering is of chocolate, and the insides are strawberry flavored. You get a good hint of the flavor. The initial bite feels chocolaty, but as you progress chewing, you get the tanginess of strawberry. The tangy flavor is not overpowering, though, and you get a sweet aftertaste.
- Vanilla: You experience the sweetness of vanilla along with the goodness of chocolate. The vanilla nougat is present inside, wrapped with a chocolaty external layer.
