History of Cow Tales Candy

Cow Tales were first introduced in 1984, but the Goetze Candy Company Inc. has a long history of producing caramel candy prior to that. Originally a chewing gum manufacturer, the Goetze Candy company was founded in 1895. The company was founded by August Goetze and his son William, both of whom would soon forgo their goal of selling chewing gum in favor of a more lucrative product.

The father and son duo concocted their first ever batch of caramel candy back in 1917 which was called the Chu-ees candy. This candy evolved over time into a candy known as Caramel Creams which also went by the name of Bull’s Eyes. This product consisted of a cream center encompassed by a layer of chewy caramel.

These early iterations of Cow Tales candy all came in the same packaging which comprised a clear plastic wrapper with twisted ends and marketed as little discs. The soft cream center of the Bull’s Eye sweets was what set them apart from the competition, and till date, it remains one of the most distinctive features of the confectioneries manufactured by this company.

Eventually, in 1984, this soft and chewy center became the front and center of the Cow Tales candy. Regardless, the Bull’s Eye was the first confectionery ever to feature this unique caramel and cream center combination.

What Does Cow Tales Look Like?

Cow Tales

Cow Tales were designed in the form of long sticks with a cream center. These are essentially the same candies as Bull’s Eyes, but in a different shape and texture.

The candy is offered in a standard size stick, which was first introduced in 1984. Each of the original sticks weighs 1 oz. The product also comes in a smaller bite-sized stick. The product has since its inception enjoyed a simple packaging and design which serves as an heirloom that signifies the bond between Cow Tales and its predecessor, the Bull’s Eye.

Candies come in white boxes with orange letters and a cartoon cow. Each Cow Tales stick is individually wrapped in colored plastic wrappers, the color of which serves as an indication of the flavor of the candy.

The cow cartoon is depicted on all the flavors and sizes of the Cow Tales candy as well as on other products by the company, usually as a happy and funny cow’s face. The logo can be orange or white, with different colors for the backdrop depending on the flavor and year the candy was manufactured. The packaging perfectly embodies the quirky and goofy-ness of the sweet treat.

The new mascot of Cow Tales candy is Duke the Cow, a humorous and cartoony cow wearing a cap and munching on a Cow Tale. On each confectionery product, Duke the Cow replaced the previous emblems, which used to depict a cow jumping over the moon.

Taste and Flavor of Cow Tales Candy

The Goetze Candy Company is widely recognized for its tasty and soft caramels, the Cow Tales candy being a perfect example of this. The creamy centers of these candies are truly distinctive and extremely delicious, providing a fluffier and sweeter taste experience than a typical caramel. The caramel exterior retains its typical chewiness in the Cow Tales candy; however, the texture really comes to life in the soft and sweet interior of the treat.

This product has a great blend of softness and chewiness, and if you despise caramels due to their texture, Cow Tales candy might compel you into reconsidering your views.

There is no other caramel product like it on the market, and one of the primary differences between the Cow Tale and the standard caramel goods sold by other manufacturers is the Cow Tales’ unparalleled texture. Even Bull’s Eye cannot match the soft and chewy texture of this caramel confection. Although the Bull’s Eye has the same cream filling as the Cow Tale, the smaller size of the candies made them less fluffy and soft.

One downside of the candy is that it tends to get stuck in your teeth thanks to the chewiness of the caramel. Also, if you have braces or have difficulty chewing, you may want to avoid this candy. Nevertheless, the fact that there are numerous you can choose from, in addition to vanilla, is also a plus point of the candy. The currently available flavors of the candy are:

  • The “original” Caramel
  • Caramel Brownie
  • Strawberry Smoothie
  • Caramel Apple
  • OREO

The company also used to offer peanut butter and banana flavors but they were soon discontinued.
