An Introduction to Sugar Daddy

Sugar Daddy is undoubtedly America’s most popular milk caramel lollipop. It is, to put it simply, a candy bar made from hard caramel. While this description may not appear to be striking, the candy bar does make a lasting impression on those who are unfamiliar with it.

This caramel lollipop tastes heavenly, especially on a blistering summer day. The sweetness takes you by surprise and makes you crave more the moment you put it in your mouth.

History of Sugar Daddy

It may come as a surprise but Sugar Daddy was originally named “Papa Sucker” when it was first introduced in 1925. The name was changed in 1932 to Sugar Daddy to denote its sweet flavor. Similar to other candies that are more than 50 years old, Sugar Daddy has been owned by various candy companies. It was made by the James O. Welch Company and was later sold to Nabisco in 1963.

Nabisco took over its production until 1998 when it sold Sugar Daddy and other Sugar candies to Warner Lambert.  Eventually it got in the hands of Tootsie Roll Industries in 1992 and they have massively enjoyed its success. The packaging of the candy hasn’t gone through any major changes over the years. The name Sugar Daddy was inspired by a rumor that Adolph Spreckels, the owner of a renowned candy company had married a woman who was more than 20 years younger than him.

What Does Sugar Daddy Taste Like?

Not for nothing is Sugar Daddy the most preferred milk lollipop in America. They have a rich, creamy milk flavor which will certainly give you long spells of bliss. The caramel bar is quite thick and pliable without becoming chewy. It may need some twists and turns when you are trying to bite off a piece.

However, once a bite is taken, you are in for a world of treats. The moment you take it in, it melts deliciously and spreads all over the insides of your mouth. You will be able to easily recognize the flavor of caramelized sugar and a hint of butter which adds a delightful touch.

If you want to eat a bar of Sugar Daddy, expect to have a mess on you. It might get a little difficult if you want to avoid having any of it drip or break off but it doesn’t dampen the fun at all. One way of adding more flavor to it is to freeze it and dip it in milk.

Sugar Daddy candy is made from slow-cooking caramel which is then enveloped in a non-stick wax paper wrapper, designed for maximum comfort and retention of taste.

Family of Sugar Daddy

If the name is Sugar Daddy, surely there has to be a Sugar Mama, right? Maybe even a Sugar Baby? Well, you are right. There was indeed a whole Sugar family.

  • Sugar Mama: Sugar Mama was an extension of Sugar Daddy in that it was a chocolate covered bar instead of caramel. Sugar Mama was quite popular too but unfortunately it was discontinued. However, there is a new Sugar Mama on the market but it is completely revamped.
  • Sugar Baby: Sugar Baby was the lovable child of both Sugar Daddy and Sugar Mama. They are simple, bite sized jelly beans with caramel filled in them. Similar to the Sugar Daddy, they were once owned by Nabisco and finally ended up with Tootsie Roll Industries.
