General Mills is one of the biggest manufacturers of breakfast cereals in the United States that has many other cereal brands under its business’ umbrella. Trix Cereal is highly unique due to its iconic history over the years and for its distinct fruity and sweet flavor. The cereal comes in fruit-flavored and sugary ground corn pieces that have been developed to provide nutrition and satisfy customers’ sweet tooth.

It was released in 1954 and has been a popular breakfast cereal among old and young Americans for years.

The best part about the cereal that makes the brand highly memorable for children is the Silly Rabbit. The Silly rabbit of the Trix Cereal has been an unforgettable marketing element that has influenced many American children.

The rabbit was designed by a copywriter named Joe Harris in 1955. Joe Harris was also the person who came up with the highly iconic tagline “Silly rabbit! Trix are for kids!” The rabbit is featured on top of every Trix box and has been a part of many advertisements and commercial campaigns as well.

History of Trix Cereal

Trix Cereal is a brand that seems to have been around forever. This is because the Trix cereal brand was first introduced to the public in 1954 by General Mills. It was released as a sugar-coated version of the company’s famous cereal Kix.

The original Trix cereal at the time of its release had only three flavors: Orange Orange, Lemon Yellow, and Raspberry Red. Nevertheless, as time went on, the company introduced more fresh and fun flavors such as Grapey or Grapity Purple, Lime Green, Wildberry Blue, Berry Blue, and Watermelon.

Trix Cereal underwent a variety of changes over the years in terms of flavors, shapes, and its brand. In 1991 and 1995, the cereal shapes were redesigned to give them a more vividly colorful look. A flavored yogurt was also produced by General Mills branded under Trix cereal that offered children sweet flavors such as “Watermelon Burst”. Trix Swirls was another product that was launched related to the Trix Cereal brand. The Trix swirls were available in different flavors like Rasp-orangey orange swirls and Wildberry Red swirls. However, they were discontinued after a few years.

In 1991, Trix cereal began to be sold in different fruit shapes instead of the original colorful corn puffs.

This change took place to make the brand more recognizable as compared to the Berry Berry Kix, which was introduced in 1992 by General Mills.

They came in five various distinctive shapes: wedge-shaped yellow lemon cereal, berry cluster shaped red and purple cereal (for raspberry and grape flavor), and green and orange ball-shaped cereal (for lime and orange flavor. However, in 2014, the original shape and flavor of the Trix cereal were reintroduced to the public to their delight.

In 2015, General Mills announced that they would not be adding any artificial colors to their cereals, and the Trix cereal would be the first to be modified under the massive change. When Trix made the change of artificial colors, only four flavors remained since the natural and healthier alternatives for blue and green colored cereal could not be found.

There was a major pushback from the general public after the release of the healthier version of cereal without artificial colors. People believed that the four-color non-artificial dye Trix was not as delicious as the original flavor.

As a result, in 2017, General Mills listened to its fans and brought back the six-color version of Trix that contained artificial dyes and flavors and the fruit shapes of the cereal. The four-flavor, non-artificial dye-containing cereal continues to be sold alongside the reintroduced flavor, and both versions have a separate enthusiastic fanbase.
